I work in GIS and understand your concern about being stuck inside all the time. I relish the chances I get every few months to do some field work. Anyway, in my region several geography majors have gone on to work for a company involved in wetlands mitigation and delineation. They go out to sites and mark the edges of wetlands and work on environmental studies of those sites. You could also consider working as a surveyor, though I met several who got out of surveying and pursued GIS studies because they hated working outdoors in bad weather. I had a professor who studied trees – she was a plant geographer. She and her students would be out studying the migration of maple trees all the time.
